Mike Brewer has lived the majority of his life in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a Major in Studio Art from Old Dominion University. Well-known local artists Charles Sibley, AB Jackson, Faye Zetlin, Vic Picket and Ken Daley were his professors. He has studied with Richard Whitney a classically trained artist and one of the country's leading portrait artists. Recently he spent two weeks studying at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia. Mike's work appeared in the Chrysler Museum and American Drawing Biennial XXIV sponsored by the Smithsonian Museum. One of his paintings is in the collection of Frank Getlein art critic for the Washington Post and author of several books on painting. Last year one of his paintings won an Award of Distinction for Painting in the Virginia Artist's Juried Exhibition and Best in Show at the Tidewater Arts Alliance Significant Expressions. Recently a series of paintings was given an award of merit at the 2012 Tidewater Arts Alliance Portfolio Show. Mike's portraits include former Eastern Virginia Medical School President, Dr. Edward Brickell, opera conductor, maestro Walter Atanassi, President of Colonna's Shipyard Tom Godfrey, and philanthropist Leonard Strelitz. Besides painting Mike has worked in advertising, publishing, printing and banking as a business owner, manager and account executive. Now Mike has escaped the distractions of the business world and spends most of his time painting. With this extra time, in addition to his portrait commissions, he is experimenting with landscapes, nudes and still life. Mike also finds artistic outlet in cooking and gardening. Mike is a member of the Tidewater Arts Alliance and the Portrait Society of America.
